When a buyer asks for the same jig in lead and in tungsten, they are usually asking a question they have not quite formed yet: is tungsten worth the money for the fish I am targeting?

The answer depends on depth, current, target species and — bluntly — how often your customer loses jigs. Here is the honest comparison.

The physics, in one paragraph

Tungsten is roughly 1.7 times denser than lead (about 19.3 g/cm³ against about 11.3 g/cm³). That single fact cascades through everything else:

Everything good about tungsten comes from that density. Everything bad about it comes from the material's other properties and its price.

Where tungsten genuinely wins

Deep water

Below roughly 60-80 m — and especially in 100 m+ — the sink-rate difference compounds. A tungsten jig reaching the strike zone meaningfully faster means more time in the zone per drop. For tuna work where you are dropping to a marked depth, repeatedly, that adds up across a day.

Current

This is the case buyers underestimate. In strong current, a bulky lead jig gets pushed off the vertical. Your line angles, you lose contact feel, and you are no longer fishing where you think you are. A compact tungsten jig holds the vertical far better.

When fish are keyed on small bait

If the biomass is small anchovy or similar, a lead jig at the required weight may simply be too large a silhouette. Tungsten lets you carry the weight without the bulk.

Bottom-contact sensitivity

Tungsten is hard and transmits vibration efficiently. Many anglers report a clearer "read" of the bottom and of subtle takes. This is partly subjective, but the material property behind it is not.

Where lead remains the right choice

Cost — and it is not a small gap

Tungsten raw material and machining costs are substantially higher than lead. For a distributor building a range across multiple weights, that difference multiplies across the entire buy.

The commercial reality: many successful ranges carry tungsten in the weights where it matters most and lead everywhere else.

Durability against rock and structure

Tungsten is hard but brittle. Drop it on a deck or slam it into rock and it can chip or crack. Lead is soft — it dents and deforms, but it does not shatter. In heavy bottom-contact fishing, lead's deformability is a feature.

Shallow to mid-depth work

Above roughly 60-80 m, the sink-rate advantage largely stops mattering. You are paying a premium for a benefit you will not use.

Lost-jig economics

This is the calculation buyers rarely do explicitly. If your customer fishes snaggy ground and loses jigs regularly, a cheaper jig lost is a smaller loss. Tungsten's value proposition assumes the jig survives long enough to deliver its advantage.

Building a range rather than picking one metal

For a distributor, the more useful question is not "lead or tungsten?" but "which weights in my range deserve tungsten?"

A common structure:

Practical note: in the 300–600 g band that tuna and deep slow-pitch work typically uses, tungsten's advantage is at its most defensible. This is also the band where a lost jig hurts most, which is why many serious anglers carry both and choose by conditions.

How to brief a factory — the six details that decide the quote

The difference between a quotation that matches your expectation and one that does not is usually the brief, not the factory.

1. Target species and typical size range. Bluefin behave differently from amberjack. The hook rating, assist cord strength and finish durability all follow from this.

2. Depth range you actually fish. "Deep" is not a specification. A jig designed for 60 m and one designed for 200 m are different products with different ideal metals.

3. Typical current strength. This is the variable that most often justifies tungsten, and it is the one buyers most often leave out.

4. Desired sink rate or fall behaviour. Especially for slow-pitch work, where the fall is the presentation. A jig that flutters on the drop and one that plummets are different designs.

5. Finish and colour spec. Including whether the finish needs to withstand toothy species — which rules out some coatings.

6. Rigging preference. Bare body, or supplied with assist hooks and split rings fitted? Rated for what? This changes both cost and liability.

A brief covering all six can usually be quoted accurately in one pass. A brief covering two generates three rounds of questions.

One more thing worth asking: whether the factory can produce the same model in both metals, so your range stays visually consistent across the lead and tungsten versions. The two behave differently in production, so confirm this at quotation stage rather than assuming it.

Finishing, hardness and environmental handling

Two things that affect a real purchase decision and are often forgotten:

1. Coating and finish

Tungsten jigs are usually finished with a durable coating, both for colour and to protect the material. Lead jigs are commonly painted or plated. Ask how the finish holds up against toothy species — a jig that looks shredded after three fish is a complaint waiting to happen.

2. Regulatory and market requirements

Lead content in fishing products is subject to varying requirements depending on destination market, and these change. For example, California's Proposition 65 imposes labelling obligations for products containing certain substances, including lead, sold into that state.

This is a real commercial consideration, not a footnote. If you distribute into California or other jurisdictions with similar requirements, confirm packaging and labelling obligations with your supplier before production — not after the container lands.

What to ask a supplier before you order either

  1. Is the weight stamped or marked, and is it accurate to the stated gram figure?
  2. What is the actual material — full tungsten, or a tungsten composite or tungsten-loaded resin? These are not the same product and should not be priced the same.
  3. What is the finish, and how does it hold up to toothy species?
  4. Can you supply both metals in the same mould/form so the range looks consistent?
  5. What are the hook and assist-rig options, and are they rated for the target species?
  6. Can you provide material declarations for my market's compliance requirements?

A supplier who can answer all six is worth more than one who simply quotes a lower price.

Frequently asked questions

Is tungsten always better than lead?

No. It is better for depth, current and compact presentation. For shallow work, heavy bottom contact, or where jig loss is frequent, lead is often the more rational choice.

Why is tungsten so much more expensive?

Higher raw material cost plus significantly harder machining. Tungsten cannot be cast as easily as lead; it requires sintering and grinding, which is slower and more costly.

Does tungsten break easily?

It is harder than lead but more brittle. Chipping on rock or on a hard deck is a real failure mode. Treated reasonably, it lasts well.

Should I stock both?

For a range covering varied conditions, usually yes — tungsten in the weights where depth and current justify it, lead for general and shallow use.

Can the same model be produced in both metals?

In many cases yes, which keeps your range visually consistent. Confirm at quotation stage, as the two metals behave differently in production.
